24 hours is more than enough time to see most of Mallorca. You can stroll through the downtown neighbourhoods, explore the cathedral, walk towards Bellver Castle, get a real taste of Mallorcan traditional food… and all of this excluding the beach. Today we are going to tell you in which way you can spend one day in Palma.
For the morning
Suppose it’s 9 o’clock in the morning, you’re in Palma ready to stroll around the city. But before that, you better start your day with a delicious breakfast. In Palma there are very good cafes where you can start your day with a smile. Curfew (in Can Cavalleria Street), Rosevelvet Bakery, (Missió Street) or Arabay Coffee (Sindicat Street) are just some of the coffee shops we recommend you to have breakfast. Perfect opportunity for you to try the famous “ensaimadas”.
Once you are done with breakfast you can start your trip around the city. First stop, the Cathedral. La Seu, as it is known, is the most emblematic monument in the whole island. It is the perfect example of Gothic Mediterranean architecture. It has wonderful terraces from which you can see all of the island. So make sure to climb the top of the cathedral and witness its lovely view.
Midday
Before stopping for lunch we recommend you to stroll through the city center until you reach Santa Catalina neighbourhood, in the past an old fishermen’s neighbourhood, today the most diverse location in the island, which combines Mallorcan tradition with European avant-garde.
As lunch comes closer, make sure to walk to the heart of Santa Catalina. This buzzing neighbourhood houses the old market of the island (from the 1920s), full of fresh and seasonal typical products. Of course you can also find delicious bars, restaurants and terraces where you can enjoy a fresh beer and some stunning food under the Mallorcan sun. Perfect place to have lunch.
Afternoon
This is the perfect time of the day to discover more of the island. Make sure to get to know more about Joan Miró, Catalan painter, sculptor and ceramicist through his
Miró Mallorca Fundació, a space which encloses all the pieces of art designed by the artist between the 50s and the 80s. In this space you can also find other permanent and temporary art exhibitions. A real genius of the 20th century.
Before it gets dark make sure to stop at the Bellver Castle. This fortification was built back in the 14th century, at more than 112 meters above the sea level. Thanks to its position this place offers one of the best view of the island. From above you can see the Pla de Mallorca, the Serra de Tramuntana, the port and the city. The name itself, “Bellver”, literaly means “beautiful sight”. Perfect time to enjoy a lovely and romantic sunset.
Night
It’s dinner time. This means it’s time to taste some more Mallorcan delicacies. This city is a booming gastronomic destination. It has a vast number of restaurants which offer a variety of contemporary and traditional dishes. “Tapas”, for example, is an excellent choice. The Tapas Club, right in the heart of the city, La Bóveda, in the old part of the port, or Forn de San Joan, in the La Lonja neighbourhood, are some recommendations we offer you.
Towards the end of the day, if you are looking for more things to do, then we recommend you to walk back to Santa Catalina neighbourhood. The streets of Sant Magí or Argentina Avenue are perfect. La Lonja neighbourhood is also an excellent walking area. If this is not enough, then the promenade area can give you exactly what you are looking for; parties and a unique nightlife experience.
We hope you will enjoy these 24 hours in Mallorca. Of course if you want to discover more about the city you need more than just one day. However, this plan is perfect if you wish to see the iconic locations of the island. Palma will always be Palma.
